All You Need To Know About Tankless Water Heaters

So What Is Tankless Water Heater?

Tankless water heaters, also known as demand-type or instantaneous water heaters, provide hot water only as it is needed. They don't produce the standby energy losses associated with storage water heaters, which can save you money. In tankless water heater when hot water tap is opened, the heating elements turn on and water is heated as it flows through the heat exchanger.

Sounds Interesting? Lets See How It Works !

So there are two types of on demand hot water heaters:
A combustion fan turns on to allow oxygen into the burner to ignite the flame as the gas control valve opens at a low frequency. Once an adequate flame is present the igniter stops sparking and beginning the next sequence of operation in a matter of seconds.

Water is heated as it passes through the coils of the copper heat exchanger, and exits from the hot water outlet pipe to travel through the pipes of the home or business to the water fixture where hot water is needed. For Condensing models, the water is preheated as it passes through a secondary stainless steel heat exchanger, capturing any extra heat before it escapes into the vent system.
The gas valve and blower automatically adjust the incoming gas and oxygen to meet the water heating demands. If the demand is small, on demand Water Heater can use a smaller flame and less gas. If the demand is greater, the flame can expand across the width of the entire burner to heat more water. The tankless water heater adjusts as needed to ensure the temperature set point is maintained. A digital controller allows the user to choose the desired temperature.

As the hot water fixture shuts off, cold water stops entering the tankless water heater and the flame diminishes. The combustion fan continues to operate at a low speed for a short period of time. This allows the exhaust of any leftover combustion gases in the system.

Tankless water heaters heat water directly without the use of a storage tank. When a hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit. Either a gas burner or an electric element heats the water. As a result, tankless water heaters deliver a constant supply of hot water. You don't need to wait for a storage tank to fill up with enough hot water.
Gas water heaters which produce higher flow rates than electric water heaters ones. Sometimes, even the largest, gas water heater model cannot supply enough hot water for simultaneous, multiple uses in large households. For example, taking a shower and running the dishwasher at the same time can stretch a tankless water heater to its limit. To overcome this problem, you can install two or more tankless water heaters, connected in parallel for simultaneous demands of hot water so for that you can also install separate tankless water heaters for appliances, such as a clothes washer or dishwater.

Advantages Of On Demand Water Heaters

For homes that use 41 gallons or less of hot water daily, tankless water heaters that can be 24%–34% more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters.
They can be 8%–14% more energy efficient for homes that use a lot of hot water around 86 gallons per day.
You can achieve even greater energy savings of 27%–50% if you install a tankless water heater at each hot water outlet than with us qualified tankless water heater, estimates that a typical family can save up to $100 or more per year depending upon usage.

What Would Be Initial Cost?

The initial cost of a on demand water heater is greater than that of a conventional storage water heater, but tankless water heaters will typically last longer and have lower operating and energy costs, which could offset its higher purchase price. Most tankless water heaters have a life expectancy of more than 20 years. They also have easily replaceable parts that extend their life by many more years. In contrast, storage water heaters last 10–15 years.

Even if we look at the size of tankless water heater it's very much compact and space saving device. About the size of a small suitcase at 18.5” x 26” x 10” or smaller, these wall-mounted models can be installed on the interior or exterior walls and in compact spaces to free up valuable space.
